It's 4:45am and a combination of turkey chili and too much beer has given me heartburn, so I'm up and typing.

Time to reflect. This blog, at least in its current form, is 5 years old. I started typing it all in Dec 2002, when I lost my last job; I switched templates about a year later, and that's where the oldest posts show up. One old post is this market-related one from 11/18/03:
Woohoo! Gold finally hit $400 an ounce tonight... what, you don't care? You should. [On soapbox] The metals market has been easy money this year, and it's only going to go up. That is almost entirely thanks to Alan Greenspan, who could care less about how strong the dollars in your bank account are. The average American has buried him/herself in debt, and only a thinning out of the future value of that debt (accomplished by the Federal Reserve and their inflationary money-printing) will keep the economy from collapsing. Of course, weak dollars = a higher gold price; be sure to check out the links on the right side of the page for more info. There are issues with owning physical metal, and I don't have any myself, but the mining stocks carry great leverage to the spot price of the metal, so that's where you'll want to start. [Off soapbox]

My investments since then have provided for a decent house, a modest (but not unlimited) financial cushion, and cheap entertainment while I burn away the hours at work. Gold is above $800 an ounce, oil has flirted with $100 a barrel, and the housing market is in shambles because of too much credit creation. Thanks, Mr. Greenspan.

Personally, I have grown little if at all; perhaps my verbal and written skills are a bit more exercised now, even if my body is not (I'm WAY out of shape). I need to start growing again, before I get too old to do anything about it.

And that's where this post comes in. It's my annual winter-downer-time-to-get-a-life-and stop blogging post, only this one's coming a bit earlier than usual. And maybe this time I'm serious. I can't keep living the way I have; my job is dead-end with a capital D, and my social life fades as my friends are busy with their families; I should be too.

So for the people who passed by my odd little journal now and then (whom I can count up on one hand), good luck and keep in touch. The CG email addy will still work, and I will probably still post photo blog stuff.

Edit: and I may still post (rarely) on my Flyover Territory blog, that is, if I decide on what I want to do with it. And maybe an econ blog too... hmm. But as for myself, the book is closed.
